  • 5 Ways To Motivate Your `Inner Athlete’ And Succeed With Fitness Goals

When it comes to building physical stamina and staying focused on fitness and body-building goals, there are no better examples out there than professional athletes. And even if you’re not competing at the tracks but only looking to lose weight, an “athlete’s mindset” will ensure that those 30 difficult pounds melt away long before your motivation does. Wake up your `inner-athlete’ with these 5 tips that will keep you in competition with yourself until you have achieved your fitness goal.

    Set Goals Like An Athlete

    • Break up lofty, long-term fitness goals into a series of realistic, short-term ones. Seeing success with short-term goals keep you motivated to stay on course with your fitness program. For example, don’t focus on your outcome goal of 30 lbs weight loss all the time. Instead, aim to lose maybe 2 lbs a week, and celebrate the loss of every 2 lbs with an increased feeling of self-confidence.

Make `Process’ Plans Like An Athlete

    • Outcome goals will merely be ideas unless you have a process plan in place about how to make them a reality. Set up daily/weekly workout timetables, nutrition charts etc. and keep a logbook to record your progress.

    Visualize Success Like An Athlete

    • Did you know that most successful athletes have received their dream trophy a thousand times before they actually won it? They have visualized their victory so often and in such great detail, their subconscious mind has come to expect this outcome as a guarantee, without a shred of apprehension or self-doubt. Adopt this winner’s habit of doing daily visualizations of your own fitness goal. See yourself in the physical condition you want to be in. Feel what you would feel once you have lost those 30 lbs. Know your target outcome to already be a reality.

Find Role Models Like An Athlete

    • Your role model doesn’t even have to be a major sporting celebrity. It could well be a PeeWee3696 on Instagram with 2.7 million slavish followers who’re mad about her glamorous selfies, or a random bunch of people you found in Google Images with the body shape you’re hoping to achieve. Look at their pictures frequently, and feel an instant charge of happy hormones firing your motivation.

    Be `Coachable’ Like An Athlete

    • Take your ego out of the equation and accept all the knowledge and practical advise you can get as you push your fitness threshold every day. The moment you let your ego get in the way, you’ll find hundreds of reasons to fall back, lose momentum and finally give up. It’s compliance – not defiance – that prepares an athlete. Be that way.

    Compartmentalize Emotions Like An Athlete

    • Emotions, both positive and negative, is par for the course for athletes too. They suffer from episodes of anxiety, fear and unease like the rest of us. The big difference is that athletes know how to compartmentalize their emotions. When they step into the game, they leave their daily concerns behind and focus only on performance. Same way, you have to leave your negative emotions in the locker room when you go in to train. If home life is not going smooth or problems at work are gnawing at your mind, you will quickly lose handle on your goal.

Appreciate The Value Of R&R Like An Athlete

    • A professional athlete always incorporates periods of rest and relaxation into their training schedule. However much you are focused on outcome goals, unless you are balancing training with mandatory periods of rest, you will quickly burn out and quit.

Recover From Setbacks And Failures Like An Athlete

    • If you’re adopting the athlete mindset, tell your inner-athlete this: there is no such thing as giving up. There will be days when you’re not on your A game, and there will be times when you’re failing miserably with your short-term goals. No matter. Treat these setbacks as learning experiences, and move on. Stop now, and you risk stopping forever.

  • Dishwasher Cuisine: Eco-Friendly Way To Cook Inside The Dishwasher!

    Dishwasher Cuisine

Did you know that `dishwasher cuisine’ is not just a possibility, but a verified method of eco-friendly cooking that is currently taking Italy by storm? And not even in an empty dishwasher – but in a fully loaded one, with dirty utensils and soap. The idea of food being prepared in a dishwasher is a bit hard to digest, like a wet pair of sneakers being dried off in a microwave, but if you stop to think about it, the whole thing does make some sort of absurd sense.

Every time you turn on your dishwasher, the appliance is using 1800 watts of electricity on an average to heat the water for cleaning. So why not throw in some airtight containers or food vacuum bags with couscous, fish, veal, fruits etc and let them cook at the same time? Imagine how much prepping it will save before meals, you won’t have to use your stove or oven, and you’ll get clean dishes, glasses, bowls and cutlery in the bargain.

It’s certainly an eco-aware way to maximize use of energy and minimizing time spent in the kitchen, and by all accounts, the food comes out tasting really good.

Ask Milan’s cook-cum-environmental-campaigner Lisa Casali, whose bestselling book Cucinare In Lavastoviglie (‘Cooking In The Dishwasher’) is converting thousands of Italians into enthusiastic dishwasher chefs.

Dishwasher cuisine What You Can CookLisa struck on this idea 7 years ago, when she began experimenting in her own kitchen with recipes that could be executed in airtight containers while the appliance was in cycle.

“Cooking and the environment are my greatest passions, and it really was a spontaneous urge to combine these two ingredients together,” says Lisa. “Just as if I were creating a new dish.”

Besides her obsession with dishwasher cooking, Lisa also propagates the nutritional value of so much precious food we throw out as scraps.

She has 4 books to her credit and Ecocucinaen, a website where she journals her efforts in this unexplored, new culinary field.

And once you get over the gnawing mental visual of your dinner in a jar, bathing in wave after wave of soapy water with pasta particles and meat morsels floating past, you too might discover Lisa’s pioneering new world of cuisine that is quick, nutritious and a conversation piece.

    * If you’re inspired by Lisa’s cooking philosophy, you can buy her book Cucinare In Lavastoviglie (Cooking In The Dishwasher) right here.

  • Mason Jar Salad Recipes For Healthy Office Lunches

    Mason jar Salad

The fabulous thing about a Mason Jar Salad is that you can prepare a whole batch in advance. Do the prepping on a Sunday, and you’re assured of a fresh, healthy meal for lunch for the next 5 days. Mix up the recipes, so there’s a surprise in store every day. And enjoy the goodness of a fresh salad that hasn’t wilted or turned soggy because you fixed it several days ago.

Here are some great recipes for Mason Jar Salads to get you inspired. Remember to choose wide-mouthed, glass canning jars for this purpose, as they are easier to load and shake out. Pint-sized jars are great for individual-sized portions. Use quart-sized jars for a larger lunch, or if you’ve got a lot of extra, fun, toppings. For a shared office lunch, go for the 2-quart jars.

Also, remember to fill the jars from heavy to light, wet to dry, and the dressing always goes in first.

  • Is Your Food Plate Color Making You Put On Weight?

    Food Plate Color

Food Plate Color seems like a ridiculous notion, right?  Did you just eat a large lunch? Did you eat it off that bright red food plate you love using for everyday meals? Did the small portion of food you served yourself look so yummy, that you had to have a second helping? OMG! You just failed your diet resolution – and the culprit wasn’t even your lack of willpower!

It was that red food plate color. No, really, it could well be the reason why your compulsion to binge got the better of you. And you overate without even realizing it.

But the good news is this: once you know the secret of appetite-suppressing colors, you won’t be tempted in quite the same way again. You’ll keep the hunger-inducing red/green/turquoise plates and bowls for other occasions, and eat your daily meals off crockery that do not encourage a hearty appetite.

If you’re aware of color therapy, you know that colors have a strong, subconscious impact on our emotions and feelings. In the same way, colors can also tempt us or repel us from the idea of food. So, here’s a list of colors you should keep in mind when you’re shopping for everyday crockery. Maybe, you can even buy a single set of plates and bowls in any of these colors if you’re the only one dieting in the family.

BLUE: IT IS COLD AND UNAPPETIZING

Blue has an overall calming effect on our moods, and by that same token, it `cools’ our reckless urge to overeat. In a study conducted with 3 sets of participants served their meals in blue, red and yellow rooms, the ones in the Blue-food-plate-colorblue room consumed 33% less food than in the other two.

You may have noticed some stores carry refrigerators with blue lights inside to reduce the compulsion to snack. Color therapists often suggest painting a kitchen in blue if a family is dealing with weight issues. But a much easier way to involve this color with your food habits is by using blue food plates.

Aesthetically, blue looks gorgeous on dishes, platters and bowls, and its appetite-suppressing qualities can be your own little secret…

PURPLE: IT IS NOT A ‘FOODIE’ COLOR

Purple is a strong, spiritual color that feeds the imagination and provokes high thinking. But it rarely occurs in the physical plane or in natural foods. Besides eggplants, purple cabbage and some grapes, there aren’t many vegetables and fruits that are purple.

Therefore, purple is not a shade our subconscious generally associates with tastiness, and our response to food served on purple plates lack that extra eagerness to satisfy a physical desire such as overeating.

    GRAY: SUGGESTS OPPOSITE OF FRESHNESS

When was the last time you said: “I’m really craving something deliciously gray to eat”? Possibly, never. Our general perception is that foodstuff turn gray when they lose their freshness.

The color, though neutral in its psychological properties, has a dampening effect on all other colors around it.

With none of the juiciness of green or the brightness of red/orange, all gray does is kill appetite and take the vibes of excitement out of eating.

Which is great news for weight watchers!

BLACK: ASSOCIATES WITH ROT AND DECAY food plate Color

Black is a color we subliminally associate with rot. When foodstuff is not merely past its sell-by date (that would be gray) but when the actual process of decomposition has set in, we expect things in nature turn a morbid black.

Serving food on black plates is pleasing to the eye, and therefore it’s great for entertaining etc., but the color will not do much to encourage our appetite if used on plates we eat off everyday.

The heaviness of black will absorb all the energy coming towards you, and that includes sensations of tastefulness and corresponding hunger as well.

    BROWN: BLUNTs FOOD CRAVINGS

This is a surprising one because you’d expect brown – the color of fresh baked bread, steaks, chocolate etc. – to increase our desire to eat. But not so, say researchers, when the color is used as a backdrop for food to be served in.

The lack of energy in this dark, sluggish shade slows down the pace of eating, which gives the brain enough time to transmit sensations of fullness and therefore curb overeating.

In conclusion, food plate color can contribute to a lot of potential goods and bads in our psyche while eating.  So, think about these little extras that could be contributing to you having those cravings!!  Be careful and choose wisely!

  • Get Glowing Skin and Keep IT!

Glowing Skin is NOT wrinkles, pimples and age spots — we dislike them all!!!

I would know, I used to have horrible skin. Acne and I were close friends much to my dismay.. like the big, cystic and painful acne. I would want to call in sick to work acne. I took all measures growing up trying to ditch it. Two rounds of Accutane, every prescription gel, retinol, and cream possible. Most of it did nothing!!! Glowing skin seemed like a fantasy world I would never be a part of. Talk about a confidence killer!! Don’t even get me started on wrinkles… no bueno!

But over the years, as I’ve followed this path toward a healthier lifestyle, I’ve found solutions to help all my skin problems nearly disappear. I’m a makeup artist and esthetician by trade and still had a hard time troubleshooting my skin. Until I changed my nutrition. You see, our skin is the largest organ we have. If it is having problems, that’s a sign something’s not right on the inside. Now I’ve got beautiful, healthy and glowing skin I can be dang proud of and the best part is that I was able to get here naturally!

Glowing skin, stacy rody, healthy tips, makeup tips

I want to share four tips that I’ve followed, that will help you not only start improving the health and look of your skin now, but also how to help undo any damage you’ve done, to return it to that glowing skin we all want.

Tip #1: Say Goodbye to Gluten

This is my number one, absolute must tip to having amazing, glowing skin! Here’s the deal with gluten, not all gluten is made the same. Over the years, it’s been modified to cause more damage then actually add healthy nutrition to our body. Especially in the U.S., today’s gluten is more of a stress inducer for your body. It causes inflammation in most of us and some more sensitive to it than others, but let’s just say I won’t touch the stuff with a ten-foot pole. All those added stressors on our system means wrinkles, acne, brown spots — and let’s be real… nobody wants that.

The stress in your body caused by gluten causes your skin to look dull and aged. Did you know that gluten is possibly linked to psoriasis, patchy skin and eczema? I’m just saying. I went gluten-free 4 years ago and not only does my tummy look less bloated, my skin has never looked better.

Before you start to think you can’t handle one more project to tackle like going gluten-free, let me tell you it’s WAY easier than you may think! There are so many healthy alternatives to gluten products, you just have to know what to look for. You can get all of my tips, tricks, and downloads in this FREE private Facebook Group. I love sharing what I’ve learned with anyone who needs it. I’ll accept your request asap Gluten-Free Sisters FB Group!!

    Tip #2: Roots and Fruits

Root vegetables and fruits are pretty close to the Fountain of Youth. You should be eating these regularly! Eating root veggies and beautiful fruits, flood the bloodstream with nutrients that your body needs to make glowing skin! Glowing skin, stacy rody, healthy tips, makeup tipsYour skin is clearer, the whites of your eyes are brighter, you sleep better — so why wouldn’t you eat them?

I know there are some people out there who say, “Should we really be eating fruits and root vegetables? Those have a lot of sugar in them.” Let’s get real for a second, it’s MUCH better than grabbing a granola bar full of preservatives and sugars. The sugars you’re supposed to avoid are things like high fructose corn syrup and the junk that’s in your processed foods. If you’re eating things like beets, sweet potatoes, parsnips, carrots, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, plums, pineapples, you’re doing your body GOOD! Your body and skin will thank you for it by looking beautiful and feeling radiant.

It’s also worth mentioning that your brain runs on pure glucose. If you’re cutting out root vegetables and fruits from your diet, your body is going to feel it.

    Tip #3: Watch the Oils

All the nasty oils in everything like Canola Oil, Sunflower Oil, etc., these are all stressors and toxins to your body. Did you know that the stress and toxins produced by oils and gluten actually prevents collagen from developing? No wonder so many people are struggling with getting and maintaining healthy skin! I use organic cold-pressed olive oil in my salad dressings and avocado or coconut oil for heated cooking. You don’t want to over heat olive oil or it turns rancid.

Remember how I mentioned our skin will tell us when something is off? If you’re eating those sugars, processed foods, fast food and cooking with all that oil that turns toxic and rancid, your body will give you signals to let you know something’s not right. We must read labels and educate ourselves to be in our BEST health NOW.

    Tip #4: Silky sleep

I’m a side sleeper and my cheeks stay planted against the pillow at night. Fortunately, I’m sleeping on a silk pillowcase. I’ve had it for almost 8 years and it looks brand new and I don’t have to worry about getting those nasty sleep wrinkles. Here’s the thing, if you’re sleeping on cotton sheets or anything other than silk, those are harder surfaces and can create wrinkles if your skin is smudged against the fabric all night. With silk sheets, your skin glides and doesn’t scrunch, so it helps to prevent those wrinkles that give you a forced, aged look. It’s great for preventing breakage on your hair and that’s how I originally learned about the benefits (shout out to my stylist!). http://shop.nordstrom.com/slipsilk-pure-silk-pillowcase

You can find super affordable options on Amazon here:
    https://www.amazon.com/SilkPillowcases

    Bonus Tip: Stay hydrated!

Your skin is not going to look good if it’s not hydrated. Glowing skin, stacy rody, healthy tips, makeup tips
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you’ve got a sweet tooth, skip the soda and opt for things like Kombucha, La Croix or Zevia. I also love 1/2 lemon squeezed into an 8 oz glass of water first thing in the morning.

Above all else, remember your body is a miracle!! It knows how to work and it wants to work and function to be vibrant and healthy. You just need to help it get there and stay that way. Stop treating your body like a garbage can, putting junk into it and start treating it like the gift it is.  Then you will have that glowing skin you’ve always wanted!!

  • Sweet Potato Fries – The Best EVER!!!

    Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet Potato anything is a staple at our house. #friesarelife

I recently had them with my bestie and she actually taught me a thing or two about how to perfect the process. I had to share because they are so EASY!!!

🍟Instead of roasting them in the oven (which you could totally still do) and drizzling oil on top, she cut them thin and misted avocado oil spray on them lightly. Less oil actually made them taste better! Then she put them in the toaster oven because it cooked them fast! Fresh herbs sprinkled on top like rosemary 🌿 and a little pink sea salt made them 👌🏻

The dip was Mayo (we use vegenaise), creole seasoning and siracha #holyyum

These have to be one of the most delicious healthy snacks you can have!  Are you going to make some sweet potato fries this week, too? 🍟

    Quick Lunch Ideas inspo

    💭🙋🏼

When I talk to women about their food habits and what they need to tweak, quick LUNCH ideas seems to be a toughie.  Here’s a great idea!

I made this for Sam, my daughter,  and it will have to be something I make for me, too! I wrapped avocado in Applegate Roasted Turkey. Then lettuce-cupped it! Theses purple carrots are so sweet and delicious, they also have the perfect crunch when biting into them! Also there are some blueberries, orange and… “Voila”!!  These quick lunch ideas are so nice to keep in the back of my mind.

    Quick Lunch Ideas: Example 2

Here’s another one that I make a lot.  This lunch is very simple as well.  A tangerine, organic almonds, organic raspberries, organic cucumber slices, and some sliced up organic chicken breast.  I also add the squeezy tube that my kids love, as well as being human with some Kettle Cooked Potato Chips from Trader Joe’s!  It is simple, easy for her to eat quickly and is very balanced!

It is so much fun coming up with these balanced lunches that help my kiddo stay healthy.  My parents were fairly healthy, but I try to find a balance between ultimate health and still enjoying life!  I never get a complaint with these lunches!!quick lunch ideas, quick lunch, healthy lunch, stacy rody, gluten-free, gluten-free mom

Who gets bored with lunch?? I sure do.  The trick for us busy ladies is to eat early enough in the day. If we get hangry because we skipped food early in the day, that’s when an entire bag of tortilla chips gets devoured. #truestory 😒#notpretty

  • Cheap Gym? Why Not Use Your Own Home?

    My Cheap Gym

I used to love going to the gym.  I would get in my car, drive 15 minutes, take 5 minutes to park, rush and change my clothes in a shared space, be barely on time for class, then workout in a class for about 45 minutes to an hour.  Then I’d usually do some stretching.  I would then go back to my car, jet out and get back home in 15-20 minutes.

I figured I spent at least 30 – 45 minutes in my car a day, just in traveling to and from the gym; had to always pack a bag, which took extra time and had to spend an extra 15 minutes at the gym to get ready and what not almost everyday.  You better believe I loved working out at the gym before kids, but it ate up an extra hour per day….usually 5 to 6 days per week.

Having kids….well, let’s just say that an extra hour a day is huge!!!!  Let’s not forget that time, gas and a gym membership cost money!!!  I needed a cheap gym alternative.  I needed a way to be as efficient as possible!!

    Why the Cheap Gym?

When my husband began doing P90X in 2012, I really was skeptical that it would work.  Well, he proved me wrong….all while I was getting bigger and bigger, pregnant with my second.  Thanks hubby!!  I watched as he stayed consistent, getting into Insanity after P90X, and losing 70lbs in six months…..all from a room in our basement.  He bought some adjustable dumbbells, a pull up rack, some mats and an old barbell with some weights.  My hubby also added a bench.  Over the years we have added a bit more, using Craigslist or Offer Up to pick up a few more items, but really that was what we needed.  Oh ya….and a TV from 2004 and a DVD player from the same year.  Our cheap gym was complete!!!

Turbofire was my workout of choice in my small, cozy, cheap gym.  It was perfect.  The space is about 12’X12′, that is including all the equipment.  We have a good amount of natural light, which I love and I can open the window.  Being in the basement, it stays cool in the summers in the Seattle area.  I don’t have to waste any time at all.

I would take a preworkout drink called Energize, throw a show on for my kids and away I would go!!  As the kids have gotten older, I will get my workout done early, get them ready and then get them to school.  I then get about 5 straight hours to work on my business, get things done around the house, grocery shop, volunteer…you name it, but I’m not taking the time to go to the gym.  Most my workouts are 45 minutes on average, many are shorter and then I am done!  No more commute and prep.  It is super efficient for the busy woman or mom!!

I never see myself going back to a gym fully.  I love my cheap gym.  A couple of times a week would be fun, especially if I was leading classes, but for the most part, it just wastes too much time.  Time is my most important and precious commodity and a gym is just not in the cards.

My Cheap Gym Just Got Better!

Now, fast forward to the present, my cheap gym is even better!  We get all our workouts, literally hundreds of them streaming, anytime we desire!  I will do the entire workout of 21 Day Fix, Hammer and Chisel, Core De Force, but I really love switching them up from time to time, I also love hybrids.  With Beachbody on Demand, I can access any of the workouts anytime.  Having access to every single workout that Beachbody has ever made!  It’s my dream come true!  No more having to search through DVD’s stacked to the ceiling!!
